A beautifully flawed milestone of creative exploration. The Topple Throne holds a special place in our studio’s history as one of the very first experimental pieces created when we began working with paper mache. This highly conversational, eccentric design sits beautifully on the boundary between a functional chair and a sculptural artifact.

The piece has a charmingly rebellious design story. Originally intended to be a simple stool, we impulsively decided to convert it into a chair mid-process. Because the organically molded paper legs bend sharply inward, the chair possesses a whimsical, temperamental balance—literally earning its name because it will topple if you lean back too much. Embracing the accidental nature of the build, the unique backrest was deliberately mounted on the “wrong” side simply because that’s where it looked best.

The structural core of the legs utilizes tightly rolled industrial paper tubes and upcycled toilet paper rolls layered in thick paper mache, while the seat is reinforced internally with salvaged wire mesh. Linking the two halves is a robust metal frame connected underneath the seat, holding aloft a beautifully shaped, live-edge wood backrest crafted by joining together premium wood offcuts left over from a temple construction project. Finished in a textured grey seat and supported by vibrant, funky, mismatched neon legs, the Topple Throne stands as an unrepeatable celebration of raw, intuitive design.
