Composting Kits

Turn your kitchen waste into something alive.

At Ramat Home, we believe every material deserves a second life and that includes what your kitchen throws away every day. Our composting kits make it simple to turn vegetable peels, tea leaves, and food scraps into rich, dark compost for your plants, balcony garden,
or terrace.

No prior experience needed. No bad smell, no mess, just a small daily habit that closes the loop at home.

Choose the kit that fits your space:

  • Plastic Tub Kit – lightweight, stackable, great for small kitchens and balconies
  • Terracotta Pot Kit – breathable, natural material, ideal for those who want a more traditional, earthy composting setup

Why Compost?

Nearly 50% of household waste is organic. Composting keeps it out of landfills, cuts methane emissions, and gives you free, nutrient-rich soil for your plants. It’s one of the easiest ways to live a little more circular right from your kitchen.

What You’ll Need?

  • Your composting kit (plastic tub or terracotta pot), with holes for aeration and drainage
  • A base tray to catch excess liquid
  • Newspaper (or any absorbent paper)
Dried leaves, coco peat, soil, or sand
  • Wet waste (vegetable and fruit peels, tea leaves, eggshells, no oil, dairy, or meat)
  • Garden scraps or dried leaves for topping

The Layering Process (Plastic Tub or Terracotta Pot)

The composting method is the same whether you’re using the plastic tub or the terracotta pot which is the only difference is the material of the bin itself.

1. Lay the tray, place the bin on top. The tray catches any excess moisture that drains
out during composting.

2. Make sure your bin has holes. Any bin you use be it plastic or terracotta. It needs holes for airflow and drainage. This is essential, without it, the pile will turn soggy and smell.

3. Line the bin with newspaper. A layer of newspaper (or any absorbent paper) along the base and sides helps soak up excess moisture especially important if you’re using a plastic bin, which doesn’t breathe the way terracotta does.

4. Add your first dry layer. Use dried leaves, coco peat, soil, or sand as the base layer.

5. Add your wet waste. Layer in your kitchen scraps like vegetable peels, fruit waste, tea leaves.

6. Add another dry layer on top. Cover the wet waste with soil, dried leaves, or other garden scraps.

7. Cover with newspaper again. This top layer of paper keeps absorbing moisture and helps control odour.

8. Close the lid. And that’s it, let the pile do its work.

Repeat this layering each time you add fresh kitchen waste: wet waste sandwiched between dry layers, with newspaper on top to keep moisture in check.

Signs Your Compost Is Ready

  • Dark brown or black colour
  • Crumbly, soil-like texture
  • Earthy smell (not rotten or sour)
  • No recognisable food scraps left

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using a bin without holes – Airflow and drainage are non-negotiable
  • Skipping the newspaper layer, especially in plastic bins
  • Adding too much wet waste without balancing with a dry layer
  • Adding oily, dairy, or cooked food (attracts pests)
  • Letting the pile dry out completely

A Small Habit, A Big Impact

Every handful of compost you make is waste that never reached a landfill and a small act that feeds the soil instead of harming it. That’s the same idea behind everything we make at Ramat Home: waste, given a second life.
